Fast forward 21 years to when I was officially introduced to the Catholic Church. I had a vague idea of the church’s beliefs but never delved deeper in the teachings until about a year and a half ago when my husband Nolan started sharing his faith with me. I started attending every Sunday mass with him and was pleasantly surprised by how much my personal beliefs and values aligned with the readings and the teachings of the church. From there my interest peaked and I was eager to learn more about the Catholic faith.
Through the RCIA program here at Most Holy Trinity, I have expanded my knowledge and understanding in both the Catholic faith as well as my own faith. Being that I started RCIA at a different timeline than normal, I was a bit hesitant on how the process would pan out but looking back I think it was perfect timing for me. With both my sponsor, husband, and teacher by my side at every meeting, I felt that any issues or concerns or questions I had were always thoroughly addressed and answered.
Going through the process as an adult I feel has a lot of advantages because I was able to look back upon certain experiences and connect it to some of the teaching I was learning about. Paul did an absolutely amazing job at breaking down all the complex aspects of the church and the religion and made the lessons more of a very dynamic structure rather than a lecture setting. I think I have grown so much by just going through the process alone for it opened up my heart more to His grace and led me to be more aware of His presence in all things. I also learned that faith is something that is ever growing and that it is okay to not know the answer to everything because by living out your faith, you can trust that God will always guide you to where you should be and that your faith journey will always be filled with continuous learning, reflecting, and growing.
Once I completed my preparation through the church, I was confident that my mind, body, and soul were ready to receive the true body of Christ. There are no words that can truly encompass the emotion and feelings that overtook me that day. I could feel God’s overwhelming love and presence filling my body and soul as I was baptized, received my first communion, and became a confirmed member of the church. I felt so blessed to have been able to experience that sacred moment baptism has to offer when God confirms His promises to wash your sins away, to fill you with His Spirit, to raise you to new life, and to make a place for you in His family. It is a time where I feel like I can always go back to when God made His love real in my life and when our relationship was further strengthened.
