First Reconciliation/Communion

Holy Communion augments our union with Christ. The principal fruit of receiving the Eucharist in Holy Communion is an intimate union with Christ Jesus. Indeed, the Lord said: "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him." Life in Christ has its foundation in the Eucharistic banquet: "As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me" CCC 1391).

First Holy Communion, the Sacrament where we receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time, is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation which "lay the foundation of the Christian life...The faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the Sacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life. By means of these sacraments of Christian initiation, they thus receive in increasing measure the treasures of the divine life and advance toward the perfection of charity" (CCC #1212).

Generally, children prepare for and receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation & First Communion during their second grade year.  Formal catechesis in 1st grade is a prerequisite for second grade sacramental preparation.  If you have a child who is older than second grade and who has not received the sacraments, please contact the Faith Formation office.
